Physical Education & Athletics

Through physical activity we learn what our bodies can accomplish. We attain new levels of personal achievement and, through team sports, build communal joy.

La Scuola Athletics

Welcome to the dynamic world of La Scuola Athletics, where middle school students embark on a transformative journey that builds character, inspires pride, and unites our community.

At La Scuola, athletics go beyond the scoreboard — they are serious and seriously fun. It’s a space where skill, intelligence, passion, and heart come together. Our student-athletes play representing something bigger than themselves.

La Scuola International School’s inclusive and robust athletics program focuses on integrity, hard work, and honoring the game. Our program is designed to help all our student-athletes gain confidence, develop self-esteem and leadership skills, and learn the value of fair play and teamwork. We champion the merits of athletics and provide a high-quality experience to every student-athlete and coach.

A high-quality experience is one in which every student-athlete:

  • Has fun playing
  • Feels they are an important part of the team, regardless of individual or collective performance
  • Learns lessons that have value beyond the playing field
  • Develops and learns as an athlete, as evidenced by a deepened understanding of the skills, tactics, and strategies

We believe in inclusion, which means there is a place here for every type of athlete: those looking to have fun and explore something new and those who want to compete with vigor. La Scuola student-athletes win with grace, lose with pride, and are supported by parents, coaches, and peers.

Middle School Sports Program

La Scuola Athletics fosters a spirit of competition, commitment, leadership, and fair play, while honoring cultural diversity and gender equity.

Example fall, winter, and spring team sports:

  • Fall: volleyball and performance training
  • Winter: basketball and performance training
  • Spring: track and field, futsal, and performance training

Student-athletes represent La Scuola in the San Francisco International Athletic League (SFIAL), where they compete against area independent schools. Last year 80% of our middle school student body participated in at least one of our athletic programs.

Physical and Health Education (PHE)

La Scuola empowers students to make informed choices that support lifelong health, well-being, and active living. Integrating physical education with health education, the program explores movement, physical development, nutrition, mental health, human growth, and healthy relationships through an interdisciplinary lens. Students engage in inquiries that draw upon the biological and social sciences to better understand themselves, others, and the factors that influence individual and community well-being.

In upper elementary and middle school, the curriculum includes age-appropriate education on puberty, human development, and sexuality, equipping students with the knowledge, critical thinking skills, and confidence to make informed decisions, build respectful relationships, and navigate adolescence with empathy and responsibility.

“At La Scuola, we believe athletics are an important part of educating the whole child. From Physical Education through our competitive sports program, we create opportunities for students to develop their skills, challenge themselves, build confidence, and learn the value of teamwork. Success goes beyond the final score — it is about effort, resilience, sportsmanship, and developing a lifelong love of movement and physical activity.”
