Themes and Subjects

When learning is connected to the lives and experiences of students, it sticks.

Middle Years Program

Students at La Scuola International School investigate their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through six developmentally appropriate, overarching themes:

Identities and relationships
Personal and cultural expression
Orientations in space and time
Scientific and technical innovation
Fairness and development
Globalization and sustainability

These themes weave through the study of eight interconnected subjects.

The Grade 8 Community Project

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program culminates in the Community Project.

These capstone assignments give eighth-grade students the opportunity to explore issues they care deeply about while developing the skills, confidence, and compassion needed to create meaningful change. Through a yearlong process of inquiry, planning, action, and reflection, they address a pressing issue that affects our community before presenting their findings to teachers, classmates, and parents. Past topics La Scuola students covered include food insecurity, hate speech, and mental health resources.

Through these extensive projects, the boundaries between the city and classroom dissipate. Students sharpen and expand their research and critical thinking skills while meaningfully engaging in community service.
